DR Congo: four female gorillas reintroduced into Virunga National Park

Four critically endangered female eastern gorillas (also known as Grauer's gorillas), rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, have been reintroduced into Virunga National Park. This is the largest gorilla translocation and population reinforcement effort ever carried out in Africa. These gorillas will bring a crucial genetic boost to a small, isolated population of eight individuals living on Mount Tshiaberimu. It is the first time that gorillas from the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE) in Kasugho have been returned to the wild. With this reintroduction, the number of gorillas living on Mount Tshiaberimu rises from eight to twelve.
